SELBY CHAT ROOMS

Welcome to the Selby room’s page here is a bit of information about Selby and the surrounding area.

Selby is a town in North Yorkshire with a population of 13,000 which is situated 12 miles south of York, along the River Ouse. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Selby once boasted a large ship building industry and was an important port predominantly due to the Selby Canal which facilitated trade to and from Leeds. The current Greenpeace craft bearing the name Rainbow Warrior was built in Selby in 1957. The town was originally Viking in origin but was also traditionally the birthplace of Henry I of England (fourth son of William the Conqueror). The famous Abbey was founded when Benedict of Auxerre reputedly saw three swans on a lake in Selby and interpreted it as a sign of the Trinity. Selby is also famous for an important battle of the English Civil War. For a time, just after the collapse of the major mining industries in Yorkshire during the 1980’s, Selby was the leading coal producer in the UK but although bucking the declining trend well into the noughties, coal mining in the area has diminished. Selby’s notables include Jack Byers, John Sherwood and Bill Nelson. In Selby Chat Rooms you will meet people who live in Hambleton, Barlow, Drax, Hemingbrough, Wiston, Shipwith and Knottingley amongst other places. The town is twinned with Carentan in France and Filderstadt in Germany.
