Redcar is a seaside resort in the North East of England in North Yorkshire with a population of 36, 000. Redcar originated as a fishing town in the 14th Century before becoming a tourist destination with the advent of the railway line from Middlesbrough. Redcar means the ‘Reedy marshland’ (Old English)referring to the low lying land by the sea on which Redcar lies. The town’s reputation as a seaside resort and tourist attraction was further enhanced by the construction of Redcar Racecourse in 1875. Redcar is the home of the world’s oldest surviving lifeboat,’ the Zetland’ which is housed in a sea front museum operated by the RNLI. There is still a small inshore fishing fleet in Redcar catching lobster, crab and fish and offering fishing trips to tourists. In 2006 Redcar was used as a location for the film adaptation of the Ian Mc Ewan novel, ‘Atonement’. In2010 Redcar was featured on the Channel 4 programme, ‘The Secret Millionaire. David Coverdale lived in Redcar as a youth and worked in the ‘Gentry’ clothes shop on Coatham Road. David Wheater grew up and still lives in Red car.
